Sprinters take centre stage as World Pool marks another Goodwood first

Four days into another memorable Glorious Goodwood, after the stayers, the milers and the fillies have had their moment, the meeting hands the stage to the sprinters. Friday’s (31 July) G2 King George Stakes (1000m) provides another fascinating contest as many of Europe’s leading speedsters renew their rivalry over the flying five furlongs.

This year marks another important milestone for World Pool, with King George Stakes Day included for the first time. Goodwood Cup Day, Sussex Stakes Day and Nassau Stakes Day have been World Pool fixtures since 2021, but expanding coverage to the fourth day of the festival reflects both the continued growth of World Pool and the strength of our partnership with Goodwood Racecourse. Bringing more high-quality international racing into World Pool benefits customers around the world through larger, deeper betting pools while showcasing some of the sport’s finest contests.

The sprint division has produced outstanding performances this season, and Friday’s feature should add another memorable chapter. The G2 King George Stakes (1000m), carded as S4-4 and due off at 10.35pm (Hong Kong time), is one of the purest tests of speed in the British calendar. First run in 1911, it is decided on a cambered straight that plunges downhill before rising sharply at the finish, rewarding raw speed, balance and tactical judgement in equal measure.

BATTAASH won it four years running, and last year JM JUNGLE provided Jason Hart and the John & Sean Quinn stable with a memorable first success in the race. He returns seeking to become the first horse to win the race in successive years since BATTAASH’s remarkable sequence.

Fifteen have been declared for the contest on ground expected to be good. NIGHT RAIDER (James Doyle) heads both the betting market and the ratings for trainer Karl Burke, and on merit: he took the G3 Palace House Stakes (1000m) at Newmarket in May before landing the G2 Temple Stakes (1000m) at Haydock, beating AMERICAN AFFAIR by a length. He carries a 3lb penalty for that success, but remains the one they all have to beat.

RUMSTAR (Rob Hornby) is the obvious danger. He arrives in excellent form after his decisive success in the G3 Sprint Stakes (1009m) at Sandown, while JAKAJARO (Jamie Spencer) once again demonstrated his consistency at the highest level when finishing third in the G2 Sapphire Stakes (1000m) at the Curragh following an excellent fifth in the G1 King Charles III Stakes (1000m). Colin Keane, so composed aboard KALPANA at Ascot last Saturday, rides PARTISAN HERO, who finished a place ahead of JAKAJARO in the Sapphire Stakes.

Australian mare ASFOORA (Oisin Murphy), a three-time Group 1 winner, returns in search of the prize that eluded her here in 2024, when she was beaten a short head. Although her recent form has not reached the heights of last season, her proven ability at Goodwood and big-race experience mean she cannot be underestimated.

AMERICAN AFFAIR (Paul Mulrennan), the 2025 King Charles III Stakes winner, SPICY MARG (Tom Marquand) and Sweden’s LAMBORGHINI BF (Elione Chaves), successful in his last three runs, also feature in an international field.

I rate NIGHT RAIDER a win and place chance, with RUMSTAR and JAKAJARO both place chances in a contest where daylight is rarely on offer.

Sprinting is a discipline Hong Kong understands better than most, and our fans will recognise the qualities required here. It is fitting, too, that Friday’s card carries a race in the Club’s name – the G3 HKJC World Pool Thoroughbred Stakes (1600m), carded as S4-2 at 9.25pm – while the Golden Mile (1600m), S4-3 at 10pm, is one of the most competitive handicaps of the British season.
