Patrick Louis Biancone: The French Master Who Made His Mark at Sha Tin

Patrick Biancone was one of the most successful trainers operating in Hong Kong during the 1990s. Hong Kong Jockey Club historical records show that his stable won major races over a wide range of distances and produced two Hong Kong Derby winners, as well as leading performers in several of the territory’s most important contests.

Biancone’s Hong Kong success was closely associated with several prominent jockeys. Gérald Mossé partnered a number of his important early winners, while Éric Legrix became the regular rider of many of the stable’s leading horses during the latter half of the decade. Their names appear repeatedly alongside Biancone’s in the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s historical race results.

One of Biancone’s first major victories came with Mastermind in the 1991 Stewards’ Cup at Sha Tin. Ridden by Mossé, Mastermind carried 126 pounds and started at odds of 19-1. He defeated the heavily supported River Verdon by three-quarters of a length, recording a winning time of 1 minute 35.2 seconds over 1,600 metres.

The following season brought further success through Rancher. The Biancone-trained gelding finished second to Sound Print in the 1992 Hong Kong Derby, beaten two lengths under Mossé. Three months later, Rancher returned to Sha Tin for the Queen Mother’s Cup. Carrying 135 pounds over the then distance of 2,450 metres, he defeated Fortune Leader by a short head as the 1.8 favourite.

Drawing Away and Helene Star gave Biancone consecutive victories in the Chinese Club Challenge Cup. Drawing Away won the Happy Valley contest in January 1992 under Alan Munro, carrying 124 pounds and defeating his nearest rival by one and a half lengths. One year later, Helene Star won the same race under Mossé. Carrying 128 pounds, he scored by five and a quarter lengths as the 2.3 favourite.

Helene Star subsequently became Biancone’s first Hong Kong Derby winner. The 1993 Derby was run at Sha Tin on 7 March over 1,800 metres. Helene Star started as the 4.2 favourite despite breaking from barrier 11. Ridden by Legrix, he defeated Red Ruffian by half a length in a time of 1 minute 48 seconds.

The victory established Helene Star as one of the leading horses of his generation, but his major-race career did not end with the Derby. In October 1995, he won the Sha Tin Trophy over 1,600 metres. He remained competitive at the highest domestic level into the following season and finished second to his stablemate Michael’s Choice in the 1996 Stewards’ Cup.

That Stewards’ Cup produced one of Biancone’s most notable stable results. Michael’s Choice, ridden by Legrix, defeated Helene Star by three-quarters of a length, with both horses carrying 126 pounds. The result gave Biancone a one-two finish and his second victory in the race, five years after Mastermind’s success.

Biancone also won important races with several other members of his stable. Swept Away captured the Centenary Vase in January 1993. Ridden by Mossé, the gelding carried 122 pounds and won the 2,200-metre contest at Sha Tin.

Deauville became another important middle-distance performer for the stable. In October 1995, he won the Ladies’ Purse under Legrix while carrying 131 pounds. Deauville then contested the 1996 Hong Kong Derby and finished second to Che Sara Sara, beaten half a length.

Forest Spring provided Biancone with another Ladies’ Purse success in November 1997. Ridden by Robbie Fradd and carrying 114 pounds, Forest Spring defeated stablemate Johan Cruyff, giving Biancone another one-two result in a major event.

Benji was another high-class performer for the stable. In April 1997, he won the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup over 1,400 metres at Sha Tin. With Legrix aboard, Benji defeated China Cruise by two lengths, further strengthening Biancone’s record in Hong Kong’s leading races around the sprint and mile distances.

The horse most strongly associated with the latter part of Biancone’s Hong Kong career was Johan Cruyff. The Danehill gelding first made his mark in the 1997 Ladies’ Purse, in which he finished second to Forest Spring, before becoming one of the leading four-year-olds of the following season.

On 7 February 1998, Johan Cruyff won the Hong Kong Classic Trial over 1,600 metres at Sha Tin. The race was officially named the Hong Kong Classic Trial at that time, rather than the Hong Kong Classic Cup. Ridden by Legrix, Johan Cruyff carried 128 pounds and defeated Danzighill.

Just over three weeks later, Johan Cruyff started as the 1.6 favourite in the 1998 Hong Kong Derby. Despite beginning from barrier 12, he produced a decisive performance under Legrix and defeated En Rapport by five lengths. His winning time of 1 minute 47.7 seconds was faster than Helene Star’s Derby time five years earlier.

The result gave Biancone his second Hong Kong Derby victory. His two winners were Helene Star in 1993 and Johan Cruyff in 1998. He also trained two Derby runners-up during the decade: Rancher finished second to Sound Print in 1992, while Deauville was beaten half a length by Che Sara Sara in 1996.

Johan Cruyff continued to compete successfully against older horses after his Derby victory. He finished third behind Oriental Express and Vialli in the 1998 Queen Elizabeth II Cup, beaten one and a half lengths. Twelve months later, he again finished third in the same race, this time behind Jim And Tonic and Indigenous.

Ho Ho supplied Biancone with another important staying victory near the end of the decade. On 29 May 1999, the four-year-old contested the Queen Mother’s Cup over 2,400 metres at Sha Tin. Carrying 134 pounds under Legrix, Ho Ho defeated Desert Fox by one and a half lengths in a time of 2 minutes 28.6 seconds.

The success completed a second Queen Mother’s Cup victory for the stable, following Rancher’s win in 1992. The different race distances reflected changes to the event: Rancher won over 2,450 metres, while Ho Ho’s edition was staged over 2,400 metres.

Hong Kong Jockey Club results therefore confirm that Biancone’s major-race record included two Hong Kong Derbies with Helene Star and Johan Cruyff; two Stewards’ Cups with Mastermind and Michael’s Choice; and two Queen Mother’s Cups with Rancher and Ho Ho.

His other significant winners included Drawing Away and Helene Star in the Chinese Club Challenge Cup, Benji in the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup, Swept Away in the Centenary Vase, Deauville and Forest Spring in the Ladies’ Purse, and Helene Star in the Sha Tin Trophy.

The results also demonstrate the range of Biancone’s stable. Drawing Away and Helene Star won the Chinese Club Challenge Cup over 1,235 metres at Happy Valley, while Rancher and Ho Ho succeeded in staying contests extending beyond 2,400 metres. Between those distances, the stable produced major winners at 1,400, 1,600, 1,800 and 2,200 metres.

Helene Star and Johan Cruyff remain the centrepieces of Biancone’s Hong Kong record. Both won the Hong Kong Derby under Éric Legrix, five years apart. Helene Star subsequently remained competitive against the leading milers, while Johan Cruyff twice reached the placings in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup.

Mastermind, Michael’s Choice, Rancher, Deauville, Benji, Drawing Away, Swept Away, Forest Spring and Ho Ho added depth to the stable’s achievements. Together, their records show that Biancone was able to prepare horses for major assignments across very different distances and conditions.

Patrick Biancone’s Hong Kong years were marked by two Derby victories, repeated success in established feature races and productive partnerships with jockeys such as Gérald Mossé and Éric Legrix. Based on the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s official historical results, his stable was one of the most significant major-race operations in Hong Kong during the 1990s.
