Can the Unbeaten Run Continue? BOW ECHO Faces His Toughest Test at Goodwood
Sussex Stakes Day takes centre stage at Goodwood, with the spotlight firmly on S2-5, the Group 1 Sussex Stakes over 1,600 metres. BOW ECHO is unbeaten in five career starts and has already captured both the 2,000 Guineas and the St James’s Palace Stakes this season. Another victory at Goodwood would further establish him as Europe’s leading miler. Hong Kong Jockey Club records also show that BOW ECHO defeated GSTAAD in impressive fashion in the 2,000 Guineas.
His biggest threat once again comes from GSTAAD, trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore. The colt has already won the Irish 2,000 Guineas and has consistently performed to a high standard in his clashes with BOW ECHO. O’Brien and Moore have also previously combined to win the Sussex Stakes with THE GURKHA and PADDINGTON, so their experience on the big stage cannot be underestimated.
Elsewhere on the card, Billy Loughnane is a jockey well worth following. He has rides in all seven races, including four for trainer George Boughey. In S2-2, TIN CHUEN KAI YAM arrives in consistent form and has every chance of following up with another strong performance. In S2-3, the Group 3 Oak Tree Stakes, Boughey also saddles AWAKEN. If she can make full use of her inside draw and secure a handy position, she has the potential to emerge as a value outsider. Hong Kong Jockey Club records confirm that AWAKEN is trained by Boughey and has previously been partnered by Loughnane.
In S2-6, CALLINGASTAR is also worth another chance as he drops back to 1,200 metres. While BOW ECHO’s unbeaten record is the headline attraction of the evening, Loughnane’s book of rides provides another key betting angle worth following closely.
